Xsilva offers mobile POS payments on iPod Touch

Montreal, Quebec-based Xsilva Systems has launched LightSpeed Mobile, a wireless version of its Apple Mac-basd LightSpeed point-of-sale system.
LightSpeed Mobile enables retail staff to take customer orders within a store and accept credit card payment by using a specially-adapted Apple iPod Touch. “The solution will also work with an iPhone,” Dax Dasilva, founder and CEO of Xsilva Systems, tells Payments Business. “But from a security viewpoint, it’s better to use an iPod Touch, simply because the only network capability it has is Wi-Fi. By contrast, an iPhone is a 3G phone that can connect to any mobile data network, which poses a greater risk.”
To use LightSpeed Mobile, the retailer needs to attach a Linea Pro ‘sled’ to an iPod Touch. This is mobile hardware specially developed for use in Apple’s own retail stores, which provides a bar-code scanner, credit card magnetic-stripe reader and the extra battery power needed for a POS capability.
“Our system is PCI-DSS compliant, and we are currently going through the certification process,” Dasilva says. “The great advantage of a mobile POS device is that it enables shoppers to avoid the lines at the checkout. Our solution takes an on-screen signature from the shopper, and emails them a receipt, while updating the retailer’s inventory system about the shopper’s purchases.”
Dasilva says that LightSpeed Mobile is being marketed both in the U.S. and in Canada. However, it currently is not able to accept Interac debit card payments, and EMV chip-and-PIN transactions in Canada. “With PIN-debit and EMV transactions, the clerk has to go to a desktop point-of-sale terminal to complete the payment transaction,“ Dasilva says. “But at least some of the work has already been done, so the time at the checkout is reduced.
The LightSpeed Mobile app can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store for only US$19.99 and requires a LightSpeed Server, which can be purchased separately from Xsilva Systems’ website. However, to take advantage of LightSpeed Mobile's full capabilities, retailers must also purchase the LightSpeed Mobile Hardware Kit for US$549. Compatible with the iPod Touch 2G and 3G, the kit includes the Linea Pro sled and charging cable.
