Android Pay launches in Canada

TORONTO -- Google's Android Pay, a mobile wallet that allows people to pay with their smartphone, is now available for Canadians to download. Users can pay with the app in stores that accept contactless payment and on apps such as Uber and Lululemon that have an Android Pay button.

Android Pay will work with Visa and MasterCard credit cards from Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Scotiabank, National Bank, Desjardins, President's Choice Financial, ATB Financial and Canadian Tire Financial Services.

"Canadians are increasingly turning to mobile payments and by teaming up with Google we are giving Mastercard cardholders the ability to pay with their Android device," said Jason Davies, vice president, digital payments, Mastercard. "Now Android users can add their Mastercard to Android Pay and use their phone to make simple, fast and secure purchases anywhere they can tap."

On Monday, Google will start to roll out support for Interac cards from those banks.

"As the payment landscape evolves, we strive to offer Canadians innovative and seamless payment experiences that are fast, secure and increasingly more digital. The launch of Android Pay in Canada will give Interac debit cardholders yet another way to pay using their own money."
