American Express relaunches Air Miles cards

TORONTO--American Express Canada (Amex) has introduced a new business card and enhanced two existing cards as part of an upgrading of its Air Miles credit card offering.

The new American Express Air Miles Platinum Business card earns business owners one Air Miles reward mile for every C$10 in purchases charged to the card at Air Miles sponsors and one Air Miles reward mile for every C$15 in purchases charged to the card everywhere else.

New cardmembers receive a welcome bonus of 250 reward miles. If they spend up to C$50,000 a year on their card, cardmembers will also receive an annual bonus of 1,000 reward miles, enough for a round-trip air fare, Amex says.

Amex has also enhanced the American Express Air Miles Gold Business Card. With no annual fee, the Gold Business card now offers cardmembers one reward mile for every C$15 in card purchases at Air Miles sponsors and one reward mile for every C$20 in card purchases everywhere else.

Both the Platinum Business card and the Gold Business card provide coverage in Amex’s Disability Plan for Small Business. Platinum Business cardmembers are also enrolled in Amex’s travel insurance program.

In addition, Amex has launched an enhanced version of its no-fee American Express Air Miles consumer credit card. The new version of the card earns cardmembers one Air Miles reward mile for every C$15 dollars in purchases charged to the card at Air Miles sponsors. Cardmembers will still earn one reward mile for every C$20 in purchases charged to the card everywhere else.

“We’re relaunching our entire Air Miles credit card portfolio for small businesses and consumers,” Jennifer Hawkins, Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Cards and Product Development, says. “We are offering more Air Miles reward miles for cardmembers to redeem at our Air Miles partners.”

Hawkins says Amex has had a very successful relationship with Air Miles in Canada for the last 10 years.

Separately, Hawkins said that just before Christmas 2009, Amex launched its first Amex-branded gift cards in Canada. “The cards are co-issued with Shoppers Drugmart and can be used anywhere that accepts American Express,” Hawkins says.
